How did Australia help the refugees?

Answer:

All refugees to Australia, whether they come here legally or illegally, invited or uninvited, are fed, clothed, housed, educated, assessed as to their motives and attitudes and, all being well, usually integrated into the community at large, all this is done at Australian taxpayer expense with no obligation on the refugee other than to obey the laws of the land.

This is why Australia is regarded internationally as a "soft touch" or "easy pickings".
