How did Baton Rouge Louisiana get it's name?

Answer:
Because the Indians (or native Americans) inhabiting the area marked a landmark or border with a "red stick" of sorts. Early Europeans to the area called it "Baton Rouge" which is French for red stick. Baton rouge did have another name before the french it was called Istrouma. which also means red stick in native American (don't know which tribe)
