I was a young teenager when this show 1st aired and it shocked us all - no one saw that coming. The writers said they wanted to remind people that while this was a comedy show it was also about war and that good people died The producers wanted to show that not everybody got home safe from the war.
Lieutenant-Colonel Henry Blake was on his way home when his plane was shot down over the Sea of Japan. As Radar reported the news, he stated that the plane "spun in", and that there were no survivors.
