It's first nickname, The Centennial State, was given because Colorado became a state in 1876, when America was celebrating its 100th birthday (or centennial). And Colorful Colorado was given because of all of the beautiful nature views and places.

Colorado is the Spanish word for "red". Various areas of the state have red dirt, sandstone, or rocks.
