the were very violent every body was scared of them The reason is that researchers are not entirely sure who really discovered The New World first. The really famous one was Columbus, but Amerigo Vespucci also had a part. The Vikings certainly landed in western Canada, in a place that they called Vinland, or the "Land of Grapes". This appears to have been somewhere in Nova Scotia.
A new theory, based on recently discovered evidence, points to the Chinese as the first discoverers of the new world. The Chinese Admiral Zheng He led several expeditions from China at least as far as western Africa, as he brought back giraffes and other exotic flora and fauna. He may have also gone as far as the Pacific isles, Polynesia, and maybe as far as North and South America.

He didn't discover America, so he has only gotten credit for it in revised history. When he returned to Spain the crown was not happy with him. He hadn't found a route to India, didn't return with gold, and he was considered a failure. He did make 3 more trips that were not successful . In his last voyage he was ship wrecked for almost 2 years and returned sick. He soon died and his son sued the crown to have them fulfill the contract they had with his father, but he lost in court.

This is one of those things in history that has been taken as fact, but isn't true. History is full of this. Once people accept an fact as "real" it becomes true whether it is true or not. American history is full of fables about what has happened. Often stories and poems written over a 100 years after an event are taken as history. An example of this is the Ride of Paul Revere.
