As the Allies were about to overtake the city of Berlin, Hitler and Braun, deep within a bunker, took their own lives rather than be captured. They had married the day before (Apr 29, 1945) but Germany had lost the war long before their demise. The story in World Book encyclopedia says that the bodies were burned by aides, but of course everything was burning in the city at that time.
