Martha Washington was George's only wife, although he was her second husband. She was a widow of the rich and influential Custis family, and a prize catch for the young ambitious and poor George Washington. She was apparently pretty, pleasant, and a source of good advice for him.
Phillis Wheatley was a slave brought over to America. Her family the Wheatley's taught her how to read and write. Eventually, she became very good at writing and started writing poetry.
Her poetry when published in Poems on Various Subjects Religious and Moral in 1773 many influential people read it. Ben Franklin even met her when she was in England.
She was a strong supporter of independence, therefore, it would only make sense that she would met George Washington. In fact, he invited her to meet him. After the meeting she wrote him a poem entitled... To His Excellency General Washington.
