How did Hervey Bay get its name?

Answer:
Lieutenant James Cook (he was not yet a Captain) named Hervey Bay as he charted Australia's eastern coast in 1770. He named it Hervey's Bay, a name which has since been slightly shortened, after Lord Augustus Hervey who was not only Cook's "boss", but also an admiral of the Blue and the Earl of Bristol.
