Hitler started his road to Leader with The Nazi Party, a small party, in Bavaria, called "The German Worker's Party". Hitler Joined this party initially as a spy, but then soon became on one the leaders of the party.

Hitler used the loss of the war to help him gain power by naming the Government, who gave in to the war "November Criminals" and "Cowards". Hitler was certain that Germany could have won the war because they were quite strong. Hitler showed his outlook on this to millions of Germans. This help with his popularity. When Hitler got arrested he again named the government ( who signed the treaty of Versailles as "The traitors who should be on trial for the betrayal of their country", and again this won over the support of many Germans including the judge who was in control of his trial.

When Hitler was free from prison, he decided to snatch power naturally rather then by force. Using demagogic oratory, Hitler spoke to mass audiences, telling Germans to leave alone the yoke chain of Jews and communists, and to make a new empire, which would "rule the world for 1,000 years".

Try this.

Hitler did not come to power until January 1933.

He did that by destabilising German society with his street fighting thugs, the SA, after the Wall Street Crash of 1929 plunged the whole world into economic crisis which threw thousands of Germans out of work again and they thought they were heading back to the bad days of post WW1.

His Nazi party had managed to get elected to a number of seats in the Reichstag but they were still very much the a minority party with a maximum of 37% of the vote which actually decreased in the November 1932 election.

By the beginning of 1933 German political and social life was in chaos and President Hindenburg who was senile invited Hitler to become Chancellor in the hope that it would be better to have him inside the tent pissing out than to have him outside the tent pissing in.

Once appointed as Chancellor he began to subvert democracy by forcing the Reichstag to pass laws which gave him more power.

In 1934 Hindenburg died and Hitler abolished the office of President and declared himself Fuhrer taking on the power of Chancellor and President.

He was backed in this action by prominent industrialists such as Krupp and von Thyssen who liked Hitler's opposition to trade unions and the Communist Party , and also by right wing elements in the Army who saw a chance to restore their own prestige.

Once Hitler had total power he had his political opponents arrested and put in concentration camps, he took all media outlets such as newspapers and radio under the control of the Nazi party and banned foreign newspapers so that the only news and political opinions the German people heard were those approved by the Nazi party.

All public servants (judges, teachers, etc.) had to join the Nazi party to keeps their jobs and schools were forced to teach Nazi ideology and loyalty to the Fuhrer.

The armed forces had to take a personal oath of loyalty to the Fuhrer which meant any refusal to obey his orders was treated as treason punishable by death.

Patriotism was prized above all other virtues and anybody who dared to express a liberal viewpoint or any criticism of Hitler was in danger of ending up in a concentration camp.

It is interesting to note that Hitler's rise to power was completely legal.

How did the Nazis get so strong?

The Nazi Party formed from the National Socialist German Workers' Party after Hitler too power. Much of Hitler's rise was attributed to the fact that Germany was in such a depression after the Treaty of Versailles demolished their economy. The people clung to Hitler's promises because they were, at that time, their only hope after getting out of the depression. So with Germany's support Hitler rose to great power and with him so did the Nazi Party.

Is there a leader who has used his or her power in a negative way?

Yes. If you count Hitler as a leader that is. Many people saw him as a leader and since they were considered his "followers" he had power over the people, and the army too (I think). Basically Hitler used the power that was given to him for suffering of others. He caused others pain. I don't know much about Hitler so may go do some research on him.. Hope that helped.
