IBM was founded on June 16th, 1911. The company was originally called the Computing Tabulting Recording Corporation (or CTR for short). Charles R. Flint approched three separate companies with the possibilities of a merger in 1910. Those companies were;
On February 14th, 1924 Thomas J. Watson Sr., the acting president of CTR, renamed the company the International Business Machines Company, or IBM as we know it now.
The Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company (CTR) was a merger of The Tabulating Machine Company (punch card company), International Time Recording Company (time clock maker), Computing Scale Company (made of scales and food slicers), and Bundy Manufacturing (time clock maker) in 1911. CTR became International Business Machines in 1924.
IBM started as company in 1896, although it was named Tabulated Machine Company back then. The name IBM was assumed in 1924.
IBM was the renamed CTR Corporation. The name change occurred in 1924. The old CTR corp manufactured key punch machines the first of these was used in the 1980 census.
