She died of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, a form of cancer which was diagnosed a couple months earlier, in January. The cancer started in her lymph nodes, but rapidly spread faster than doctors were able to treat her. This was because the healthy cells in her body were replaced by the cancerous ones. In an effort to fight the cancer, she quit her chain smoking, and curtailed some of her editing duties to devote more time to fight off the disease. By early May, doctors informed her that no further treatments could stop her death. She died on Thursday, May 19th, 1994 at 10:15 pm in her 5th Avenue Apartment in New York City, surrounded by her family and close friends.

Because treatments for her non-Hodgkin's lymphoma failed to stop the spread of the disease. They ceased treatment by early May, and doctors allowed her to leave the hospital so she could die at her home.

After battling for five months with a rare and rapidly spreading non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that caused cancerous cells to take over the healthy cells of her body, doctors told her that further treatment would do no good. She elected to return from the hospital to her home and met her fate alongside family, friends and her books.

She checked out of Lennox Hill Hospital roughly 48 hours before her death so she could die in her apartment at 1040 Fifth Avenue. By that time, she had pneumonia and the doctors told her nothing more could be done so she insisted on coming home, dying there in her bed surrounded by her books and family at 10:15 PM on May 19th 1994.
