∙ 14y agoAIDS seems to be a legitimate hypothesis as to what Jenny died from as she did have many high risk behaviors right at the inception of the AIDS epidemic. But, equally as valid from a medial stand point is the possibility of Hepatitis B or C. Hepatitis could account for Jenny not having skin lesions and wasting. Hepatitis is more readily transmitted than HIV. Forrest Jr. was by all accounts growing healthily.....so I vote Hep B is a possiblity.... strangley I am writing as though these were not fictional characters.

∙ 6y agoJenny died of Hepatitis C. While the movie never specifies what virus Jenny has, the sequel to the book (Gump & Co by Winston Groom) definitively states that she died from Hepatitis C that she contracted as a result of her drug use.
She says to Forrest (while they're in the park in Savannah and Forrest Jr. is playing on the swings): "Forrest? I'm sick...I have some kind of virus. And the doctors don't...they don't know what it is, and there isn't anything they can do about it."

∙ 11y agoIt was never stated in the movie but the implication was that she had contracted the AIDS virus. Especially in the 1980's, AIDS was a mystery even to the medical community. The life-prolonging drugs today did not exist then and the life expectancy after diagnosis was a few years at best.
