John Joseph Pershing commanded the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I. He holds the first United States officer service number (O-1), and was nicknamed Black Jack.
In 1897, Pershing returned to West Point to teach tactics. It was here that cadets, who were angered by his strict discipline, began calling him "Ni**er Jack" in reference to his time with the 10th Cavalry. This was later relaxed to "Black Jack" which became Pershing's nickname.
