How did John J Pershing get the nickname Blackjack?

Answer:
In 1897, Pershing returned to West Point to teach tactics. It was here that cadets, who were angered by his strict discipline, began calling him "Ni**er Jack" in reference to his time with the 10th Cavalry. This was later relaxed to "Black Jack" which became Pershing's nickname.
