How did Julius Caesar become Caesar?

Answer:
He didn't become Caesar (as in heir to the throne in Imperial times). His actual name was Caesar. Caesar was just a title given to later Emperors. Caesar became a dictator by the election of the Senate. Later, he was granted dictator-for-life, but he was quickly assassinated by a group of opposition Senators.
