You mean the November or Bloshevik Revolution. There had been a March Revolution earlier that year which forced the czar to abdicate and created a Provisional democratic government to rule until a permanent parliment could be organized. In November, members of the Bolshevik minority in the Petrograd Soviet (council) staged a coup in the capital Petrograd, taking over banks and other establishments. The Provisionall Government couldn;t do much about it, so they were overthrown in favor of the Bolsheviks, who subsequently pulled Russia out of World War I.
