Leonardo served the studio of his Master, Verrochio, from the age of 14. As his talent became obvious, surely those who bought the Master's works noticed Leonardo's promise, and began ordering work from him directly (called "commissions"). As long as he was under Verrochio's roof, however, the Master would receive the money; so, only by starting his own studio could Leonardo make a real living and gain fame.

THEN is when he, as an apprentice, would have made one work that showed all the things taught to him by working under the Master--- his "master-piece"-- showing he was ready to leave and start his own shop. Imagine how the meaning of that word has changed since then-- any museum art worthy of study is now called a masterpiece!

While Leo was admitted into the painters' guild at the age of 20, he continued to work in Verrocchio's shop for at least another 4 years.

Leonardo's first employers were the princes or dukes of their cities, and their Churches. At that time is was unusual to make a custom portrait or work-- other-than for the church or government. Also, Leonardo was fascinated with mechanics, and probably helped raise the large gilded ball onto the dome of the cathedral in Florence when he was 16.

He also excelled at planning and designing decorations and costumes for festivals, skills that were probably his most-notable at the time. After the age of 20, Leonardo was a lifelong "celebrity," noted for his manner of language and philosophy as much or more than his accomplishments.

Surprising, Leonardo perhaps best-known first as a Renaissance "rapper"; that is, he sang rhymes he made up on the spot and accompanied his lyric with what was to become the violin. None of these were written down nor recorded.

But his fortune was uncertain while he stayed in Florence; by 1481 it was a dejected and destitute Leonardo that approached the Duke of Milan--- first as a musician-- and wrote a famous letter of introduction seeking employment as a designer of tools of war and defenses, which only barely mentioned that he could paint, and featured a proposed great horse statue as a tribute to the Duke's father.

While he was showing skill in artworks in his master's studio, Leonardo da Vinci first became famous as a rhyming musician, like a rapper, while playing an early violin. It is this scarcely-known skill that brought him to the attention of the ruling family of Florence, the diMedici.

As a matter of fact, when the diMedici were dissing him by selecting other artists to go to Rome to work on the decoration of the Vatican's newly-finished St.Peter's Cathedral, Leonardo sought the favor of the Duke of Milan--- as a musician!
