It cracked in 1835 tolling the death of John Marshall.
Bells are supposed to have clapper springs inside. When the bell is struck by the clapper, the spring immediately pushes the clapper away from touching the bell. A struck bell produces a TREMENDOUS amount of vibration. If the clapper is not pushed off the bell, the vibrations are centered around the point where the clapper is "laying" on the bell. A crack is a normal result. Bell casters believe that the bell's clapper springs failed or were never installed on The Liberty Bell.
Also, a cast bronze bell cannot be repaired. Nor can you melt it down and re-cast without loss of the unique tone of a bell. If the bell was indeed re-cast, it was re-cast with new bronze.
