How did London Bridges falling down evolve?

There have been a number of bridges roughly where the modern London Bridge stands. Some were fairly ramshackle affairs. The bridge that was finally demolished in 1842 was renowned for partial collapse and had been patched up many times over the centuries. That's the one the song was about.
