Marie Leveau. there were several women by this name with differing life-dates. It means, in French, Marie the beef, maybe she was hefty.-actually Marie the Veal!
She died June 16, 1881 at the age of 79, in New Orleans, Louisiana. The local newspapers reported her passing on June 16th, but Marie Laveau actually died on June 15, 1881 at her cottage on Rue St. Anne between Burgundy and Rampart Streets in Vieux Carré (French Quarter). Her death certificate (Vol. 78, Page 1113, Orleans Parish) listed her age as 98. A recent discovery of a Baptismal Record in the New Orleans Archdiocesan Archives is now generally accepted as being her's and gives her date of birth as September 10, 1801. This would have made her aged 79 at the time of her death. A copy of Marie Laveau's Death Certificate is on display at the New Orleans Historic Voodoo Museum, 724 Dumaine Street, New Orleans, LA (www.voodoomuseum.com).
