The New Testament doesn't say what Mary Magdalene did in the years after Jesus departed. But church tradition did preserve some stories and legends about her. According to one story, she went to live in a city called Ephesus (in modern Turkey) and eventually died there.

However, there is another tradition that she and several other people traveled to southern France, and that she lived at a place called La Sainte-Baume for thirty years. Some versions of this tradition also associate her with the Holy Grail.

Other traditions hold that she travelled to Britain and France. Since Magdalene means 'of Tyre' or a Phoenician, it seems quite possible she took the message of the resurrected Christ to Phoenicia's former colonies. That meant the Mediterranean and Atlantic countries of Britain, France, Portugal and Spain. They are better known as Tarshish in Biblical accounts. Both France and Turkey (or "Quay of Tyre" = Torquay) border the Mediterranean or Medi-Tyrrhenian Sea (Sea of Tyre). Joseph of Arimathaea was the last person to see the dead body of Jesus and Mary the first to physically meet the resurrected Jesus. It seems quite plausible they travelled together as witnesses to what are obviously the most important events in history (death-burial of Jesus and His Resurrection). Actually, it is almost certainly absurd for them to have remained in Jerusalem when Jesus commanded His followers to go around the whole world and explain the good news (gospel) of His Resurrection. Normally, one might expect travellers like these people to retire when elderly and return home and probably die there. However, Jerusalem probably had become too dangerous by the time Mary would have retired so she quite likely retired and died in Tyre-Lebanon or in one of the missionary lands she had worked in. If she was married to Joseph of Arimathea he could have been a bit older and might have died before she retired. But these issues can only be speculative, though logical. Most likely, Mary Magdalene is not buried in Jerusalem. She probably died of old age like most people but no one is really sure where.
