Maryland's colonists made a living just like all the other colonists did. Some jobs were farming, shoemaker's, lumberman, craftsmen, fishing and trading. Trading? Whats Trading? What kind of stuff did they trade?Trading is something were two people or more swap an item another person wants. To trade something to some person you both have to agree on something. Some stuff they traded was rice, indigo, beans, squash, and corn. Also known as the three sisters. But the main thing the colonists did sell or trade was dried tobacco leaves. Back then tobacco was known as the colony's cash crop. That's how most of there money got to them.
Many were selected to join the colony because they had a skill that was essential to the survival of the Maryland Colony. Those with essential skills and qualifications were given very short periods to serve as indentured servants or a free ride to the new world and the grant of a parcel of land. Common laborers could be obtained from the debtors prison but specific job qualifications were essential to the health and growth of any new enterprise.
The Coin of the Realm in Maryland was tobacco. Goods and services were bartered for tobacco which was shipped to England and sold. If you had tobacco then you had money because it was used much like the greenback dollar of today.
in 1600's i believe that's when colonel crumb first retired in a place he named new freedom. There he built an empire on his own producing the finest and best cookies you ever did taste. soon he opened up his first factory in 1609 and supplied Maryland with jobs and cookies. then come late 1640's that empire was closed due to heath and safety probs (to many rat droppings not enough choc chip) it was later reinvented in 1930 by Ruth Wakefield of Whitman, MA, who ran a restaurant called Toll House. hope this helps :-)
