She and Benito along with another Fascist were executed in the field by Communist Italians and hanged upside down to curry favor with the invading Allies. The Allies were not impressed by such a transparent show of solidarity and ordered the bodies cut down. * The execution of Mussolini occurred two days before Hitler's suicide, and Hitler may not even have been aware of it.

Mussolini and his mistress Clara Petacci were caught by Italian communist partisans on April 27, 1945, near the village of Dongo (Lake Como), as they headed for Switzerland to board a plane to escape to German controlled Austria. Mussolini had been travelling with retreating German forces and was apprehended while attempting to escape recognition by wearing a German military uniform. After several unsuccessful attempts to take them to Como, they were brought to Mezzegra. They spent their last night in the house of the De Maria family.

The next day, Mussolini and his mistress were both shot, along with most of the members of their 15-man train, primarily ministers and officials of the Italian Social Republic. On April 29, the bodies of Mussolini and his mistress were taken to the Piazzale Loreto (in Milan) and hung upside down on meat hooks. This was both to discourage any fascists to continue the fight and an act of revenge for the hanging of many partisans in the same place by Axis authorities. The corpse of the deposed leader became subject to ridicule and abuse.

In practice, this philosophy led to a brutal war against Ethiopia and other lands in which thousands of innocent people were killed - some by the use of mustard gas. It led also to the persecution, torture and killing of Italian Jews and people who simply disagreed with fascism, including Italian communists, socialists and certain Catholic politicians. Finally, this ideology led to a disastrous alliance with Nazi Germany - an alliance in which Italy was first occupied by the German army and ultimately liberated by Allied armed forces. Although Rome and the Vatican were spared, many beautiful and in some cases historic Italian buildings, residences and communities were destroyed, and thousands of innocent Italian civilians were killed in the war to liberate Italy from Germany.
