Her paternal grandmother did pottery herself and noticed that Nampeyo could do it herself and encouraged/taught her. After that, Nampeyo just went onto become the grandmother to many future modern Hopi potters.
She said she really got into music when she heard the song "These Boots Are Made For Walking" by Nancy Sinatra. :) That's when the whole idea of her becoming a famous singer started.
