How did Osama bin Laden die?

It was announced on Sunday, May 1, 2011 that Osama bin Laden was killed by US troops on the ground in a 40-minute firefight. It was reported that he was killed by U.S. Navy SEAL Team Six under the direction of the CIA. The Navy SEALs are a part of the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC). The troops arrived in two helicopters. Four men, including Osama, as well as one woman died in the attack. No American was wounded or killed. Osama bin Laden was killed in the last five to 10 minutes of the siege. Osama was shot twice in the head. One of his wives identified his body. The US took custody of his body and buried it in the North Arabian sea shortly afterwards (it is Islamic tradition to bury a body within 24 hours).

President Obama ordered the attack on Friday, April 29. The US first received intelligence of bin Laden's location in a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan in August 2010 and confirmed the location over the next few months. Bin Laden was the mastermind of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and has been in hiding for nearly a decade.
