He died in the Apostolic Palace, which is located in the Vatican, following an urinary tract infection. In the final days of his life, the lights were kept lit on the top floor of the building, where he was at the time. On Saturday, the second of April 2005, he died at about 3:30 PM.

Pope John Paul II was hospitalized with breathing problems caused by a bout of influenza on February 1, 2005, and left the hospital on February 10, but was subsequently hospitalized again with breathing problems two weeks later and underwent a tracheotomy. On March 3, 2005, following a urinary tract infection, he developed septic shock, a form of infection with a high fever and low blood pressure, but was not hospitalized. Instead, he was monitored by a team of consultants at his private residence since there was virtually no chance of recovery. He passed away on April 5, 2005.

Pope John Paul II was 85 years old when he died. In his later years, his health began to suffer, particularly after he developed Parkinson's Disease during the 1990s.

Instead, he was monitored by a team of consultants at his private residence. This was taken as an indication that the pope was nearing death. On Saturday April 2, 2005, at about 15:30 CEST, John Paul II spoke his final words, "Allow me to depart to the house of the Father"). A few hours later he fell into a coma. He died in his private apartment, at 21:37 CEST of heart failure from profound hypotension and complete circulatory collapse from septic shock.
According to his death certificate, Pope John Paul's death was attributed to septic shock, hypotension and circulatory collapse.
