The gods did not happen to become gods, they just were. Poseidon was the son of Kronos and Rhea and thus the brother of Zeus and Hades.
Kronos was a Great Titan God. And because of that blood, his children were also gods. As for how they became more specific Gods, once they overthrew Kronos out of anger towards him, they held a lottery to see who would rule over what. Hades drew the Underworld, Zeus drew the Heavens, and Poseidon the sea. Thus becoming God of the Sea.
