"Ringo Starr" sounded like a cowboy name, which suited young Richard Starkey's love of Western movies.

"Ringo" came from his fondness for wearing rings. ("Why do you wear so many rings on your fingers?" "Because I can't fit them all through my nose!") "Starr" came from a promoter wanting to bill Starkey's solo drumming spot as "Starr Time".

The name was given to him during his time with Rory Storm and The Hurricanes when Rory Storm insisted they all adopt stage names.

"Ringo" came from his love for cowboy movies, and for wearing lots of rings; "Starr" came from his solo drumming spot with Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, billed as "Starr Time". (His family and close friends call him Richie.)

Ringo was originally the drummer for a band called Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, while The Beatles had Pete Best. The two bands played in a number of the same clubs and venues. Best wouldn't always show up for gigs, so Starr would fill in. Eventually he was asked to join to replace Best.

It wasn't--his stage name was always Ringo Starr, even when he was with The Hurricanes. "Ringo" was about his wearing rings, and "Starr" was a contraction of his surname (of course with that "star" connotation).
