In 1965 Ruth Fertel mortgaged her home to purchase a steak house for sale by Chris Matulich. The original name was Chris Steak House. In 1976 the restaurant was destroyed when a kitchen fire erupted. Ruth then bought a new property a few blocks from the original restaurant. Her original contract with Chris Matulich precluded her from using the name Chris Steak House in a different location. So, Ruth added her name making it Ruth's Chris Steak House.
