Lord Blackwood had a clip on his noose that shifted the weight to his waist and took a mixture of ancient herbs to give himself the appearance of being dead. The herbs momentarily stop one's pulse from being felt. The limestone outside of Lord Blackwood's grave wasn't shattered by supernatural force. Instead, it was shattered beforehand, and glued together by the honeycomb substance Holmes and Watson saw while going through the redheaded dwarf's quarters.

Conan Doyle resurrected Holmes as he was short of money. he brought him back in the story called "The Empty House". You find out that Holmes did not fall into the Reichenbach Falls, but he used his knowledge of baritsu (a martial art) to push Moriarty over. So he kept a low profile for a while then appeared again.

He survived because he was not thrown off the cliff. He climbed down and made it look like he had gone over the edge and died. This allowed him to escape being followed by Moriarity's henchmen.

He landed in the bed of a truck filled with John's favorite chips. He then proceeded to have Molly drag Moriarty down to the first floor and dump him out of a window. Moriarty too small to fool John? They stuffed Moriarty's clothes with the chips, put a Sherlock mask on him, and that's how Sherlock survived. He wasn't recognized because the chips turned him orange.

He didn't fall to his death at the falls as was assumed by Watson. He climbed away and went off and did other things in the world. He returned to capture one of Moriarity's key helpers.
