∙ 9y agoIt's a bit of a long story... The founder - Jack Cohen, who was the son of a Polish imigrant, founded Tesco in 1919, selling surplus groceries at Hackney market, in the London. The name was formed after Mr Cohen bought a consignment of tea from Thomas Edward Stockwell. He made new labels using the first three letters of the supplier's name (TES), and the first two letters of his surname (CO), forming the word TESCO
