Bands like The Clash, who despised "old fart bands" like Yes and Led Zeppelin, still attributed much credit to The Who for their punk mindset and rebellious, loud, destructive, and nihilistic image portrayed in the 1960s.
heavy metal didnt just appear. the first heavy metal guitarist obviously didnt have any other metal guitarist to consider an influence. instead, he most likely considered classic rock his influence. some harder, heavier riffs often heard in such bands like the who or ac/dc are also often considered pioneers of heavy metal.
