How did Winston Churchill become a leader?

Answer:
Many might have thought Churchills' political career was over by the time he actually became Prime Minister of the UK in 1940. He had already been Home Secretary & Chancellor of the Exchequer (Interior minister & Finance minister respectively) in times past, long times past, & the results were not always glowing. However he was respected as an opponent of Naziism & was seen as anti-appeasement. But there was much discord within the Conservative Party in UK, and the opposition was weak, the Liberals, post LLoyd-George in decline & Labour yet to establish itself credibly in government. And so, by the time Britain goes to war in 1939 Churchill is an old man. Norway is a disaster for the British forces, unable to stop the German invasion, which took place to prevent British intervention. There is a vote of confidence called in Parliament & Neville Chamberlain is defeated. He resigns. Churchill become PM of an all party government on May 10 1940, coincidentally the same day as the Germans invade the Low Countries & France.
