After a desperate counter attack at the Battle of the Bulge, January 25th, 1945; Germany was severely weakened Hitler and his wife fled to his secret bunker the "Führerbunker" because the Soviets had begun the Battle of Berlin, and it had become unsafe. While in his bunker Hitler realized that he could not win the war and would be captured. So instead he committed suicide by taking cyanide (a poison) and shooting himself in the head. By using two methods it would ensure his death. His wife also took the cyanide and died next to him. After the Fuhrer's death the Axis forces in Europe surrendered. VE-Day (Victory in Europe) is now celebrated on May 8th because May 8th 1945 was the day that the Allies officially accepted the surrender of Germany and the European Axis.
However, Japan was not finished. They continued fighting until America dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. By dropping these bombs it showed the Japanese emperor that he could not win the war and he surrendered. A few Japanese generals did try to form a coup and stop the emperor from surrendering, but it had already been done, and the war was over. Now V-J Day (Victory in Japan) is celebrated August 15th because August 15 1945 was the day that the Allies officially accepted the surrender of Japan. VJ-Day is also the official end of WWII.
