Australian Aboriginal People were clever making and using tools and weapons. They were the first people in the world to use stone tools to grind seeds, and also to introduce ground edges on cutting tools.

Australian Aboriginals, at the time of European settlement, were still largely aspiring towards stone age technology although stone axes have been found and obsidian was used where available, as a cutting edge.

Most of the weapons and tools they used were made from locally obtained wood and skillfully crafted into surprisingly functional products.

Spears were made by straightening out tree roots or branches and carefully heating the tips in fire to produce a hardened tip.

The "woomera" was a wooden thowing device that could be fitted to a spear and had the effect of a lengthened arm giving greater power when throwing the spear.

The "nulla nulla" was a wooden club used with deadly effect.

The most surprising of all is the "boomerang", a bent, mostly flat piece of wood with a slight twist in it and spectacular aerodynamics that, when thrown properly, would return to the thrower. Other boomerangs used for hunting and fighting were much heavier and did not return when thrown, although deadly effective in the hands of a seasoned thrower.

They also used various animal parts such as tendons for tying, the resins and gums from various plants for sticking things together, sea shells and animal bones in the course of making tools and weapons.

They would gather available resources and turn them into objects with sharp points or hard ends. With the spear they would get some would, carve it, then place a sharp rock on top so it was capable of piercing animals skin.
