y'know - what Darwin came up with wasn't all that radical. It was merely the next short step in what others had already laid down a lot of ground work for. (Wallace in fact beat him to publication with it) What really made the press was the full frontal confrontation with religion over the topic. There was some impact with the scientific community but the real fireworks were in the public sector.
