  1. In 1950 the rate of population change in China was 1.9% each year. If this doesn't sound high, consider that a growth rate of only 3% will cause the population of a country to double in less than 24 years!
  2. Previous Chinese governments had encouraged people to have a lot of children to increase the country's workforce. But by the 1970s the government realised that current rates of population growth would soon become unsustainable.
  3. The one-child policy
  4. The one-child policy, established in 1979, meant that each couple was allowed just one child.
  5. Benefits, including access to education, childcare and health care, were offered to families that followed this rule.
  6. Those who had more than one child didn't receive these benefits and were fined.
  7. The one-child policy was keenly resisted in rural areas, where it was traditional to have large families The one-child policy has been enforced strictly in urban areas, but remote rural areas have been harder to control.
  8. Many people claim that some women, who became pregnant after they had already had a child, were forced to have an abortion and many women were forcibly sterilised. There appears to be evidence to back up these claims

China is decreasing it's population because after the war, it had to increase it's population. The population increased too much and china said you need to stop and it published the one child policy. China is running out of space and resources.

Because they wanted population control, they allowed 1 child per house hold. Often, they would kill the girls in order to keep the family name living on. If a house did have more than 1 child, they would be fined greatly every month, until they had to send them away due to lack of money.

China has the largest population of any country. It has a population of about 1.3 billion. It is very difficult to cater for that many people. Having enough food, houses, schools, jobs etc. is a big stress on a country. All sorts of problems can result from having too many people. Some control on the amount of births would reduce the strain on China and its people, which is why the government have tried to do that.

What is the political structure of the southern colonies?

The early southern colonies were almost entirely agriculture instead of trade like the northern colonies. They were ruled by a Governor sent from England who followed rules from the planter class (the people who owned the land).
