The French settled in more north-western areas, such as Quebec in Canada and the northern part of the Midwest in America. They set up fur-trading posts and generally got along fine with the Indians. Many of their settlements failed, but many survive today. The English were mostly Puritans, who were very harsh religious settlers. They established many sea trade posts along the east coast of the United States (the 13 colonies) and down in the Jamaica area. They did not get along with any of the Native Americans, and killed millions of them, as well as drove them westward to get out of their "new territory."
