After the violence of "Bleeding Kansas," got to a point of even more debate on the issue of slavery. John Brown became one of the leaders who fought against slavery as well.
Financed by abolitionists from New York and New England, John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry was carefully planned. The idea was to seize the federal arsenal located at Harper's Ferry. Brown would distribute guns from the arsenal to the slaves who joined him and lead a widespread rebellion to end slavery.
With a party of 22, including 5 Blacks, Brown struck in the early morning hours of October 16, 1859. He quickly captured the arsenal and issued his appeal for slave support. Unfortunately for Brown, he had picked a poor place to start an uprising. Communications were slow and slaves were few in that part of Virginia. Only a few Blacks made it to Brown's side.
Telegraph and railroad enabled the government to respond quickly to the raid. Within a day a detachment of marines, commanded by Colonel Robert E. Lee, invaded the arsenal and captured Brown. The state gave Brown a fair trial, but convicted and hanged him for "treason against the Commonwealth of Virginia."
