Hawaiian statehood was granted by Act of Congress on March 18, 1959, effective August 21, 1959.

During the imperialist 19th century, most undeveloped countries were occupied by European powers. In 1843, US protests forced Britain to abandon its temporary occupation of the islands. Hawaii was annexed to the US in 1898 after private businesses seized control in 1893 from the Hawaiian monarchy and formed an unrecognized republic. Hawaii underwent substantial expansion and modernization during World War II and became an integral part of the US policies in the Pacific. After 60 years as a territory, it had most of the attributes of a state, and in 1959 joined the Union as the 50th state, following Alaska (the 49th state) by about 7 months.

There were several steps in Hawaii becoming part of the United States.

  • King Kamehameha I united Hawaii as a kingdom in 1810
  • The last ruler of the dynasty founded by Kamehameha died in 1872, leading to a system of elected kings.
  • During the 1800s, Americans began to be important in Hawaii.
  • In 1874, the election of the king was contested, leading to landing of US troops.
  • In 1887, a constitution was forced on the king, stripping the king of power and giving voting power to white Americans. Asians were denied the vote under this constitution.
  • In 1893, Queen LiliÊ»uokalani decided on a constitutional reform. The response to this was that American businessmen took over power and ran the government by committee. This takeover was investigated by the US government, which announced it was illegal in the Blount Report. Another report, coming to the opposite conclusion, was issued the following year.
  • In 1894, the provisional government was replaced by the government of the Republic of Hawaii, still dominated by American businessmen.
  • The government of the United States started discussing the annexation of Hawaii in 1896, with some people leaning one way and some another. Grover Cleveland, who favored annexation, was elected in that year.
  • In 1898, the United States entered into a treaty with the Republic of Hawaii approving annexation. The annexation actually took place in that year.
  • After it became a territory, planters in Hawaii prevented it from becoming a state because it was to their economic benefit to have it remain a territory. They gradually lost ability to move local politics until the people of Hawaii were able, in 1959, to achieve statehood.

The Hawaiian island group attracted a good number of Americans over the years. It was rich in fruit, chemicals and livestock. Pressure from American settlers caused the island group to be annexed in 1898 and declared a US territory in 1900. Its citizens applied for statehood in 1959 and via an act of the US congress became the 50th US state.
