Although Hitler had tanks and planes the German army still relied heavily on horses for the transport of supplies.
The french came and went relatively quickly whilst the Russians were forced to fight the Germans all the way to Berlin. It was a bitter hard fought war which lasted from June 1941 to May 1945. Losses on both sides were in the millions.
Both the French and the Germans never took account of the Russian winter and suffered badly from the intense cold. Of Napoleon's Grande Armee of 500,000 men only 30,000 returned home to France.
