It started as a tropical wave in the Atlantic in mid-August, 1992, and went through two cycles of intensification as it moved westward. It passed through the Bahamas on August 23, hitting near Elliott Key and Homestead, FL as a Category 5 hurricane on August 24, 1992. Crossing Florida, it entered the Gulf of Mexico and moved west then north, hitting near Morgan City, LA on August 26.
Hurricane Andrew got its name like all other hurricanes did. Since Hurricane Andrew was the first storm of the 1992 Atlantic Hurricane season, it was named a name starting with A. The second storm has a name starting with B. Meteorologists create a list of 21 names and they are reused every 6 years. If a storm was especially destructive or notable, then that name is taken off the list of names and is replaced by a name starting with the same letter. The letters Q, W, X, Y, and Z are not used. If the number of storms in a season is more than 21 then meteorologists use Greek letter names such as Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Epsilon, and Zeta. That happened in 2005.
