The Devil is one of Lucifer's names. He also goes by the names of Beelzebub and Belial, also The Evil One, Satan, Perdition and Son of the Morning.

In the preexistance, Satan as we know him now was of high standing and was called Son of the Morning. He rebelled against God when he wanted to take God's glory unto himself. He was cast out of heaven with a third of the hosts of heaven, and sent to the earth without bodies to tempt man.

The Devil literally means Slanderer.

several people will tell you different things, some will say that God created humans and told all angels to love them above all others, even God himself. lucifer refused to do so, and fell from grace. others will say that it was because he was prideful and wanted to have a throne above God's throne, thus he fell. this is also probably not correct. there is only one mention of 'lucifer' in scripture,Isaiah 14:12 and actually lucifer means, lightbringer, morningstar, or the shining one, this term can be used the refer to all angels as they are God's shining ones, this is why often when referring to Satan, people use the name lucifer to describe the angel he was before he fell. this being said, it also has been cited that 'lucifer' was a cherubim, these are creatures that support God's throne, that is not to say that they are lowly angels, but actually are granted the power by God to touch his throne, meaning they are very high ranking angels of a sort. speaking specifically of scripture, lucifer himself is not mentioned, but there are several accounts of kings that are corrupt, the famous one being of Babylon, that are cast downward. the word Satan means opponent, adversary, or accuser. in the Hebrew tradition, this refers to the angel that is the heavenly prosecutor who brings a persons sins against them for judgment. job 1:6. in dealing with the idea of the king of Babylon, he basically exiled all Jews to Babylon, this is talked about in Job, and actually could be the whole basis of the good vs evil thought. before this, God was the creator of good and bad, beautiful and repugnant. it is only after the exile of the Jews (as job was not finalized until after the exile) that we see this sift of there being a different entity for evil. in the Old Testament we see several instances of God being quick to anger and to punish, which are said to be evils. in the New Testament, Christ died for our sins, thus giving us the ability to be forgiven for our sins. this idea leads people to believe that God is all forgiving and is only synonymous with good. this seems to not be true as God is only forgiving of those who repent of their sins, suggesting that God is still capable of causing evil. sin in humans seems to not be an outside force that tempts us, but a result of the human condition we call free will that was giving to us from God. there are still several approaches to look at, but these seem to be the most supported with other writings from the time of The Bible, as well as by scholars that i have been reading about. i am still looking into this idea as i have a very important paper to do on this topic, and the best thing i can recommend is to look at scripture. find a version of the bible that is easily understood by you, look up online verses that mention Satan or lucifer or anything like that and derive a meaning for yourself. there is no reason to take another persons word for it (which is the worst thing you can do as it leads to cults and ignorance) when you can derive your own answer, and take from scripture what it means to you.

i hope this helped, i know that it is not a direct answer, but its the best i can do. and if you are looking at this from a religious point of view, remember that the bible was written by man. it is fallible, and the only real answer of any substance you can get is to pray and talk to God for your answer, any answer humans can give you may not be correct as there is no way to prove that it is.

Lucifer was once an archangel of God, and his name meant "beautiful" or "light." He thought he was equal to God, and wanted the same power as God. Because of this, God sent Lucifer along with other angels who supported him away from heaven and straight to hell. The other angels that fell with him became the first demons, and Lucifer became ruler of hell.

A:Irenaeus said the Devil sinned of his own free will out of envy of God, wishing to be adored like his maker, and out of envy of the happiness of humanity. This points up the early Christian difficulty with the chronology of Satan's fall. If, as Irenaeus implies, it was Satan who tempted Eve, he could have sinned through envy of God and thus entered Eden with his heart already corrupted, or sinned at the moment he tempted Adam and Eve.

There have been differing views on whether the devil is in hell, or that punishment is awaiting him. Justin's view that the Devil's punishment was reserved until the end of time was followed by some of the fathers, but the opposing view that the evil angels were punished from the moment of their sin eventually prevailed. The prevailing doctrine left an odd contradiction, for it implied that the devil was at the same time being punished in hell and roaming the world seeking the ruin and destruction of souls.

Many biblical scholars and students point to these verses to answer the above:

Ezekiel 28:12-16

New Living Translation (NLT)

12 "Son of man, sing this funeral song for the king of Tyre. Give him this message from the Sovereign Lord:

"You were the model of perfection,

full of wisdom and exquisite in beauty.

13 You were in Eden,

the garden of God.

Your clothing was adorned with every precious stone[a]-

red carnelian, pale-green peridot, white moonstone,

blue-green beryl, onyx, green jasper,

blue lapis lazuli, turquoise, and emerald-

all beautifully crafted for you

and set in the finest gold.

They were given to you

on the day you were created.

14 I ordained and anointed you

as the mighty angelic guardian.[]

You had access to the holy mountain of God

and walked among the stones of fire.

15 "You were blameless in all you did

from the day you were created

until the day evil was found in you.

16 Your rich commerce led you to violence,

and you sinned.

So I banished you in disgrace

from the mountain of God.

I expelled you, O mighty guardian,

from your place among the stones of fire.

Footnotes:
  1. 28:13 The identification of some of these gemstones is uncertain.
  2. 28:14 Hebrew guardian cherub; similarly in 28:16.
