At the age of six, after the death of his beloved mother, Michelangelo was sent to a grammar school where he met painter Francesco Granacci, who later encouraged him to draw. Then at the age of thirteen, he was apprenticed to work at the workshop of painter, Ghirlandaio he then was influenced by the ancient art in the Gardens of San Marco to sculpt statues of his own.
