There are many different orders or types of Monks. Those who cloister themselves off from the world believe in study and prayer. That is to say they believe contemplation and prayer can bring the grace of God to the community in an intercessary manner.
You have probably heard of Monks who never or rarely speak. That is because they desire to keep their minds on spiritual issues in the hopes God will bless the world with His presence and power. The notion of removing ones self from the polutions of the world is in view here.
The Bible is very big on prayer and praying for others. There is NO MENTION of removing ones self from the world. Quite the contrary. The Bible reminds followers of Christ to get out and into the world with the message of salvation in Christ. Believers are encouraged to be a blessing personally as well as seeking blessings. See the last chapter of the Gospel of Matthew.
We ought never be too quick to judge the merits of a cloister. I just do not see it in Scripture.
