The word oxygen comes from Greek words meaning "acid former" because most mineral acids and all carboxylic acids contain oxygen.
Oxygen's name is of Greek origin. The Greek words were "Oxy genes" which means acid and acid former. Oxygen was discovered before 1772. It was not recognized as an element at that time.
Carl Wilhelm Scheele first discovered air in 1772, also Joseph Priestley in 1774. But it has never been noted where Oxygen got its name from.
