Also circuses (PT Barnum got started in the 1800's, and his circus became Barnum & Baileys which is still around), freak shows, exhibitions and museums of all sorts. Gardens, poetry recitals, book readings, walking tours of cities, game tournaments such as cards and chess, sporting events including horse racing (saddle and carriage), Baseball, sailing, tennis, Lacrosse, polo, golf.
Amateur performances were as common as professional touring companies. It was very common for the young lady of the house to entertain the guests with a piano performance or other recital after dinner, before the cordials.

∙ 9y agoDon't forget that they worked a lot longer hours in those days. Much less free time, because there was a lot less automation. And the lack of good forms of light usually meant they went to bed when the sun went down and got up with the sun.
They played various games. Music was a big source of entertainment. Everyone in the town would go and visit any show or concert or play that came to town.
If they could get their hands on books they would read. They made toys. Some people were artists - painting, carving, etc.

∙ 14y agoThey didn't have the free time children do today. By the time a child was 10+ they were working to help feed the family, in a nunnery, working at the castle, helping the the men in the army. In some cases they were all ready to get married. Mary Queen of Scots was engaged when she was 4 years old, at seven sent to his families holdings to learn from his mother. The life span of people was much shorter, so a person at 40 was lucky to be alive. The idea of "teens" didn't develop until the 1940's and in 1600 a person 15 was considered an adult. There were two stages of growth; baby and adult in the 1600's. No one had any time to fool around with someone for a long time waiting for them to be able to take care of themselves.
