As with nearly all artistic movements, some of "society" loved it, others thought it was alright, and some more hated it. To elaborate, artistic taste is one of those things that tends to vary greatly from person to person, so it is impossible to make generalizations about what "society" thinks about oen.

Because impressionist were breaking from traditions and depicting the lives of people and events that were "insignificant," the initial reaction to impressionism was very disjointed. It was a break from tradition and there were many artists and patrons that were appalled. Art seemed to be turning in a direction that left critics uneasy. If you look at paintings by neoclassical artists such as Ingres and David, as well as paintings by Romanticist like Delacroix, the subjects are entirely different than those of Manet and Cassatt.

Most people hated it. Most people always hate new forms of art.

People thought it rough and unfinished.

New styles are always received with suspicion, and so was Impressionism. The word was originally used as a derogatory term.
