It had far reaching consequences. Pictures of the aftermath of battles could be sent all over the world. Pictures of loved ones could be carried into battle, or sent back to the family. It was the first war that was recorded visually.
The American Civil war was the first war to be extensively documented with Photography, but the first war photographs were earlier. There were photographs taken during the Crimean War in the 1850s. Probably the first war photo still extant is one depicting US troops on the street in Saltillo, Mexico, during the Mexican War.
After the war no one was much interested in looking at the depressing scenes of a Horror so recent and well-remembered. The photography process was cumbersome and the negatives were large glass plates coated with chemicals. Becasue no one cared thousands upon thousands of these irreplaceable images were sold for use as greenhouse panes, and over the next several decades their images were faded away to nothing by the sun.
Both sides did. The camera was invented by 1830, so when the Civil War started, it became the first photographed war in history. One of the more famous Civil War photographers was Mathew Brady. He took the photos you see a lot of Gettysburg. He cheated some because he moved bodies and items like guns to make a picture better. The newspapers of the time didn't have the ability to place photos in the paper, so they had stock figures of soldiers and officers for both sides. All they had to do was draw on the faces. The use of photos in this time changed people's view of war because they could see the horror of it. The same thing happened with Vietnam, when the evening news showed the men in the jungles of Vietnam. The reality of war helped bring on protests about the war.
Mathew b. Brady and his photographs made a lasting impact because for the first time people could see that war wasn't a romantic place but an ugly greusome place.
If you are refering to the American Civil War, niether had support from European countries. The South wanted the aid of the British, and tried many times to break the North's naval blockade. The South depreately needed the aid of Britain, not militarily, but finacialy. The South needed some place to sell the cotton they grew, since they were unable to do so they suffered from 7000% inflation at the end of the war. One could write a whole masters thesis on Europes effects on the Civil War.
It helped the South and the North to divide all of the fighting into two parts. The Western Theatre and the Eastern Theatre.
