How did religion play a role in the evolution of art and architecture during the early christian through Gothic period?

Answer:
The Church of Rome was the major Patron for many projects. Various Popes commissioned work. The building of churches was important and the taller the church the closer to God was the belief. This desire drove the architects and artists to design taller buildings with light streaming in through stained glass windows. The progression can be seen in the development of the Romanesque arch into the High Gothic arch. All art was used to tell the stories of the Bible. Only Monks, Clergy and the very wealthy could read and write. The stained glass windows, paintings and sculptures all told the stories of the Bible.
